For those inclined to modify new Mustangs, there are so many choices. You can change almost any aspect of the car to make it your own. We can’t say for certain what is the most popular first mod, but there are some obvious contenders. And, one of the top choices is an exhaust upgrade.

Because Lethal Performance had already installed one of its Resonator Delete setups, the company chose to try some different axle-backs with this configuration to see how they sound. The Magnaflow Competition mufflers are available in the axle-back (PN 19103), as installed here, and as part of a full cat-back system (PN 19101) with an X-pipe as shown in this product shot.

Some go right for a full exhaust with long-tube headers. They want maximum performance. Others split the difference with a cat-back, but many just want a better sound and choose an axle-back as an easy way to install more aggressive mufflers.

For many of its projects, Lethal Performance starts with the bolt-ons and works its way up the ladder just like you would. Lethal almost always includes a Magnaflow upgrade as part of this progression.

“MagnaFlow’s exhaust systems add a smooth, deep tone while increasing exhaust flow and power. These bolt-on kits have been engineered for maximum performance with dyno proven results,” says the company. “MagnaFlow systems reduce backpressure while maintaining a rich, powerful performance tone. Annoying exhaust frequencies are dampened with a dense wall of acoustical absorbing material, and the straight-through design prevents excessive heat retention, allowing the entire system to run cooler and last longer with no restrictions.”

In the case of its 2015 Mustang GT, Lethal opted to try a few exhaust options. This time around, the Lethal camp chose to enhance its project with Magnaflow’s Competition axle-back, and you can hear it paired with the Lethal Resonator Delete right here:

Now, we know Lethal’s 2015 sounds pretty great with no suitcase and the Magnaflow Competition axle-back. We also know, installing the Magnaflow kit is pretty straight forward. If you need a little reassurance to do it yourself, we documented the install, as performed by Jesse Guajardo, at Power by the Hour in Boynton Beach, Florida.

Since the Magnaflow axle-back system is essentially a set of mufflers, it is necessary to cut the stock tailpipes and remove the factory mufflers to mate with the Magnaflows. Measure twice and cut once as the old adage goes.

Then Jesse slid the factory tailpipes into stock hangers and installed the Magnaflow mufflers starting with the driver side.

Jesse followed suit on the passenger side, leaving all the clamps a bit loose. He then ensured the tips were properly aligned and that there were no clearance issues before he clamped them down for good.

Here’s what the completed system looks like. When installing a system like this, you will want to take it for a test drive to ensure there are no leaks. After doing so, you will want to bring it back and re-check the tightness of the clamps.

The Magnaflow system looks great on the car and, as you can see in the video above, it definitely gives the latest Mustang an aggressive personality.
