Since the Fox Mustang days, Steeda Autosports has improved the shifting of manual-transmission Mustangs with its line of Tri-Ax shifters. If you’ve been holding out for an upgrade for your 2015+ Mustang, your time has arrived. Steeda recently released its Tri-Ax shifter for the latest Mustangs, and it packs in quite a few upgrades.

Available for both the 2015+ Mustang GT (PN 555-3717; $439.95) and EcoBoost (PN 555-3718; $439.95), the Steeda Tri-Ax shifter is a complete kit that includes the shifter, Steeda’s shifter base bracket, and a sheet of Dynamat to keep NVH and heat out of the cabin.

If you’ve been following the progress of Steeda’s S550 upgrades, you know that the company had previously improved the shift feel with bushing upgrades and a stouter billet mount. The mount is included with the new Tri-Ax shifter, but the shifter brings a lot more to the table, including a 30-percent reduction in shift throw, and a lower shift knob for easier power shifting.

“Our Tri-Ax shifter features rigid mounting in the front and Steeda poly bushing in the rear, virtually eliminating slop and shifter deflection. With less deflection you will feel a much more direct gear change,” says Steeda. “The assembly is transmission and chassis-mounted so you don’t get the ‘walking’ affect of a fully transmission-mounted assembly, all while still gaining a more rigid shifter feel.”

A billet beauty, the Steeda S550 Tri-Ax is said to sharpen shifts, reduce shift throws by 30 percent and lower the shift knob 1-inch for easier power shifting.

Not only is the Tri-Ax more precise, but it is a direct replacement for the factory unit so the reverse lockout works like stock, the backup camera turns on when you shift into reverse, and it will even accept the stock shift knob, as the heat-treated, nickel-plated, 4140-steel shift lever retains the stock thread pitch. Better yet, it features adjustable shift feel that can be tweaked from the interior of the car thanks to the Tri-Ax’s top-loaded installation.

The S550 Tri-Ax offers adjustable shift feel via interchangeable internal springs. Thanks to its top-loading design you can mix and match the two medium-resistance springs and two high-resistance springs from inside the car.

“The kit comes complete with two medium-resistance springs and two high-resistance springs. The Steeda Tri-Ax has adjustable return springs to fit every drivers’ preference on shifter feel,” says the company. “Using an offset spring tension ensures that you hit your Second-Third gear change every time. Since our S550 MT-82 short shifter is top-loaded, once the base plate is mounted, you can change all of your springs, levers and other options all from inside the car without taking out the full shifter assembly!”

If this sounds like the shifter you’ve been waiting for, the Steeda Tri-Ax is now available for the 2015+ Mustang GT (PN 555-7317; $439.95) and EcoBoost (PN 555-7318; $439.95).
