Gentle Squeeze

Modulating the nitrous hit on a 2015 Mustang with a JMS controller

Nitrous is magic. Spray this gas into your engine, add extra fuel to support it, dial in the timing and you have a recipe for an instant boost in power and torque. Of course, that torque hits hard as soon as you hit the button. That can make putting the extra oomph to the pavement a challenge.

If you missed our story on the Nitrous Express upgrade on Lethal Performance’s 2015 Mustang GT, the car picked up peak-to-peak gains of 134.02 horsepower and 206.83 lb-ft of torque with a 150 shot. Putting that down to the pavement could be a challenge.

Traditionally people wire the nitrous to a button or have it engage at wide-open throttle. Both methods have their benefits, but wouldn’t it be nice if you could have the nitrous spray when the engine is at WOT and the rpm you desire?

That’s just one of the features offered by JMS Chip & Performance’s Progressive Nitrous Controller (PN NOS-6021; $399), which is why Lethal Performance opted to augment its nitrous-equipped 2015 Mustang GT with one of these powerful units.

You can learn more about the JMS unit, right here…

“The JMS Progressive Nitrous Controller is the first and only device on the market that allows for maximum adjustability and combines all of the popular add-ons in one single package. There is no need for external relays, trigger switches, or rpm switches and everything you need is built into the controller,” Brad Grissom of JMS Chip & Performance explained. “One great feature is the device does not require a laptop for programming, and all features are adjustable using a screwdriver making it perfect for quick tuning at the track or on the dyno. Other extended benefits include, adjustable solenoid frequency, built-in adjustable window switch, WOT enable trigger, dual independent ramp rates, and the universal design allows for use on 1-16 cylinder engines.”

The JMS Progressive Controller (PN NOS-6021; $399) packs a lot of popular nitrous controls in one small package. From rpm and WOT activation to progressive ramping of the solenoids, this controller lets you fine-tune your nitrous hit with nothing more than a small screwdriver.

Not only does the JMS controller determine when the nitrous engages, it offers numerous other features that will maximize the performance of your system. It will output a signal to activate a timing retard, and it can even independently control the ramp rate of the nitrous and fuel solenoids. Moreover, the controller can either turn off the nitrous or adjust the ramp rate of the solenoids in response to tire spin.

“The biggest benefit at the track is the ease of use and adjustability via the simple design, and you can immediately tune the system based on track conditions and wheel spin characteristics,” Brad added.

The Lethal Performance 2015 Mustang GT received the JMS controller to augment the Nitrous Express kit, which we covered previously. As follow-up we followed the installation of the JMS unit at Power by the Hour in Boynton Beach, Florida. The Lethal GT has since moved onto to a Whipple-supercharged combo, but if the company ever decides to run nitrous and blower, this controller will definitely come in handy.

We previously detailed the install of the Nitrous Express High-Output Coyote system on the Lethal car. In this application, the kit is pilled to feed a 150-shot from its 15-pound bottle. With the JMS controller wired into the system, the Lethal crew will be able to adjust the hit of the system to fit the available track conditions.

Jake Long of Power by the Hour gets started by wiring the Nitrous Express solenoids into the JMS controller. In addition to the expected power and ground connectors, Jake ran the orange wire to the fuel solenoid and the white wire to the nitrous solenoid.

With the nitrous system connected to the JMS controller, Jake then picked up the necessary throttle position and tach signals from the factory harness to supply necessary activation data for the controller. Jake stripped the wire and soldered the connection.

There is no laptop or tuning software necessary to adjust the JMS Progressive Nitrous Controller. You just need a small screwdriver to make the adjustments to the activation, ramp rate, solenoid frequency, fuel solenoid duty cycle and more.

It turns out that there is enough room in the factory batter box to tuck the JMS controller away when you aren’t adjusting it. Once you dial in your settings, you can put hide it away and protect it from the elements.
