Lethal Performance launches its Shelby GT350 project with a burnout

We have been involved in covering a lot of project cars over the years, but we recently had the opportunity to truly jump in on the ground floor with a new one. Lethal Performance got the call that its new 2016 Shelby GT350 was to arrive at Weikert Ford in Lake Wales, Florida, so we arranged to be there when Team Lethal picked up its car.

We had the good fortune to be on hand as Jared Rosen and Jonas Cooper of Lethal Performance picked up the company’s latest project—a Shelby GT350—at Weikert Ford in Lake Wales, Florida.

Not only was it a rare experience to see one of these cars before it goes under the modding knife, but it was an opportunity to see one of these amazing, new Ford Performance machines delivered to a new customer at the dealership.

“We are happy SVTPerformance could meet us here,” Jared Rosen said as we took a quick ride in the GT350. “We have been there since the beginning and SVTP—especially the members that support us—is family.”

Jared and his partner in crime, Jonas Cooper, had the good fortune of attending the Shelby GT350 Track Tour at Sebring International Raceway, so they had already driven GT350s at speed on a racetrack, so they knew what to expect from this new project. In fact, Jared was so impressed with the handling of the car and the high-rpm pull of its engine that Lethal plans to have this car spend time on both the drag strip and the road course.

Jared took us for a ride in Team Lethal’s new GT350 and gave us his first impressions of the car and a preview of what the company has planned for this project. Knowing the life this Shelby GT350 was about to embark on, we might have suggested that a burnout on the dealer lot was in order before Jonas hopped in the car and headed south to Lethal headquarters. It didn’t take much convincing for Phillip Weikert to give us the go-ahead. Jonas engaged the line lock and let her rip (thanks to Weikert Ford’s Justin Land for the slow-mo footage)…

Take a good look because this car won’t remain stock for long. The Lethal crew plans on following its Modus operandi on this car as well. They will start with the basic bolt-ons, including a JLT cold air intake, a Lund Racing calibration, and some exhaust modifications. From there things will escalate quickly with a Whipple supercharger.

As you can see, the stock power output is quite sufficient to convert the GT350’s stock Michelin Pilot Super Sports into a reasonable approximation of Cumulus clouds. However, stock output isn’t what Team Lethal has in mind for this car. The plan is to start out with the basics, like tuning, exhaust and a JLT Performance cold-air intake. From there, the mod list will get significantly more aggressive with the addition of a 2.9-liter Whipple supercharger.

It didn’t take too much arm-twisting for us to convince the nice folks at Weikert Ford that the Team Lethal Shelby GT350 should do a little burnout for our cameras before it left the dealership. Jonas engaged the line lock and lit up the rear tires to the delight of everyone on the lot.

During our brief ride with him, Jared found the car’s shifter an improvement over the base Mustang lever, but we still expect to see an aftermarket unit in this car in the future.

This is no stripped-out model. Lethal Performance opted to start with a GT350 loaded up with the Technology Package to reflect what many of its customers might choose.
